Thanks to the generous support of UHAUL and Tree Canada, the Calgary Tree Planting Team is happy to announce a tree planting event at Siksika Nation on June 24th, 2023 from 10AM – 2PM!

We will be planting 200-300 Saskatoon berry bushes at the Nation. When these plants mature in future years, they will be part of a new berry farm run by Siksika Nation. This farm will provide berries to the community for years to come, and the farm will also provide new economic opportunity to the community. This is the second year in a row we are planting a row, and it will be a pleasure to see how much the first row has grown.

Please consider signing up to volunteer to help us plant these bushes. Volunteering will involve raking, digging holes, planting, spreading mulch and being part of a wonderful thing. Please plan for a 1 hour drive if you are coming from Calgary. We are excited to see the smiling faces of our wonderful Calgary Tree Planting team volunteers at this event.
What to bring:
– spade/shovel, rake and/or wheelbarrow if you have one (if not, don’t worry as we will have extra)
– lots of water and lunch/snacks
– dress for the weather
– wear closed toed shoes.

To sign up please email volunteer@yyctree.ca and let us know you are signing up for the July 16th Siksika tree planting event. Please include this information:

  • your name, phone number, how many volunteers you are bringing, and if you are able to bring a spade or shovel, wheelbarrow, or rake. And note that we will have about a dozen extra spades so please don’t hesitate to come even if you have no equipment.
  • if you are bringing kids. You are welcome to bring kids 7 years old and over, as tree planting can be a bit hazardous for younger children. And we will require that you sign a waiver (especially for minors).
  • Let us know if you are willing to sign a photo release. In order to thank our UHAUL and Tree Canada for their support, it is nice to be able to post about the event with pictures online. If you don’t want photos of you, let us know and we can arrange it.
This event requires about 20 to 30 volunteers. If you can’t stay the entire time, that is understandable. We will email you with the exact location and we will send out reminders.
Thank you for offering your precious time in helping us with this important initiative!
